Twilight Session for Sixth Form/ Yr 11 students

A presentation to Sixth Form/ Year 11 students will be delivered by French students from Bordeaux who are studying for a vocational baccalaureate in retail or administration and are coming to Bristol on a work experience programme funded by Erasmus Plus as part of their study. 
 
The speakers will share their experience of doing a vocational course with foreign languages, tell Sixth Formers/ Yr 11 students about the funding opportunities available through Erasmus Plus programme and speak about their personal experience of living abroad. There will be a Q&A session at the end.
 
The session will take place in Room G001 in Charnwood House (North Bristol Post 16 Centre, 30 Cotham Park, Bristol BS6 6BU) at 4 - 5 pm.

Celebrating Success: MFL Pop Video & Speaking Competitions Regional Finals

We are delighted to announce that our big annual Celebrating Success Event will take place on Wednesday 29th June at Wills Hall Conference Centre, University of Bristol this year.

The event will run in two parts:

MFL Speaking Competition Regional Final -

All winners & runners-up from three sub-regional finals in Barnstaple, Swindon and Bath are invited to compete. Students may either improve the presentation that they delivered in March or make an entirely new presentation. Creativity, imagination and an element of drama will be highly commended! The topics are the same as for sub-regional finals and are available in the downloadable competition flyer (see below).

Students will be judged on presentation as well as language skills (spontaneity, fluency, accent, interest, range of language and originality) by a panel of judges.

Cash prizes will be given to winners (£50) & runners-up (£25).

Pop Video Competition Award Ceremony -

Nine nominated videos will compete for the 'Winner 2016' award. The winners in each category, including the 'Online Viewers' Award', will be announced in the Oscar-style ceremony.

Cash prizes will be given to winners (£100) & runners-up (£50).

And we are hoping to have a live performance by one of the Pop Video winners from previous years again!!

Nominees will be notified by the end of May.

The voting poll for the 'Online Viewers' Award' will open after the closing date for four weeks and nominees will be notified 10 days prior to the event.

Programme: 

We are planning to start the event around 12 pm and finish by 4.30 pm.

The programme will be available in early June.

Pop Video Competition 2016 (South West)

Do you think you could write a song or rap in a foreign language? Do you have the IT skills to make a video to accompany your song? If so… this competition is for you.

The Routes into Languages South West project is inviting you to submit a short video, animated if you prefer, to accompany a song or rap which you have composed in a foreign language. The competition is open to students between the ages of 11-18, in full time education and will be judged in two categories: 11-14 and 15-18.

The winning entry will receive a prize of £100 and a trophy. Three runners up in each category will receive £50. We will videostream your video on the Routes into Languages South West YouTube website. And there is a special prize - The Online Viewers' Award! You will have a chance to vote for your favourite video. The details about it will be posted on our YouTube website before the closing date. The award presentation ceremony will be held on Wednesday 29th June at the University of Bristol.

All Pop Video entries from the South West will automatically be entered into the National Online Viewers' Award 2016!

Interactive Training Course 'Teaching French through Drama' - CANCELLED

We are delighted to invite teachers of French to attend a one-day training course 'Teaching French through Drama', which will take place on Wednesday 13th January 2016 at 11 am - 4 pm at the University of Bristol.

 

Cost: £105 per person (including lunch)

 

This event is organised in partnership with Theatre VO (Audrey Johnson and Emilie Poletto). 

Programme: 

Join our interactive workshop to help you use drama techniques to teach French in your classroom or to organise an event. Learn how to revise grammar in context (tenses/ moods/ etc), develop communication, boost your pupils' confidence in French, correct their pronunciation (ever wanted to correct that "u" sound?), discover some vocabulary and have practical examples to take back to your classroom.

 

Content: Icebreakers, warming up, vocabulary building, pronunciation, grammar and communication...

Training Workshop for French Assistants - Bristol French Drama Festival 2016

We are delighted to offer secondary schools in the South West an exciting opportunity to take part in our creative project -- Bristol French Drama Festival, which will take place on Saturday 12th March 2016 at the University of Bristol.

 

You can learn to run a French theatre club for your pupils, culminating with a fun performance for all! Pupils will perform a piece prepared in their drama club and share it with other participants, friends and families!

Bristol French Drama Festival is supported by Institut Français

Programme: 

The training workshop is designed to help you organise a theatre club at your school with a view to participate in the festival in March.

 

It will be held on Wednesday 11th November at the University of Bristol at 2 - 4.30 pm. This will give participants the confidence and numerous ideas to develop a drama club in school. Training sessions are delivered by two enthusiastic French drama teachers who have years of experience in running French theatre workshops for children and adults.

 

You and your pupils will then have 4 months to prepare a short piece on the pre-determined theme, which they will perform on stage at the festival on 12th March 2016. There may be opportunities for subsequent informal meetings in between.

 

Cost: £35 per assistant

Bristol French Drama Festival 2016

Bristol French Drama Festival – an exciting and creative project for secondary schools in the South West, organised by Routes into Languages South West in partnership with two enthusiastic and experienced French drama teachers – will showcase short productions prepared by French drama clubs in secondary schools on Saturday 12th March 2016 at the University of Bristol.

Foreign language assistants and teachers are invited to organise a French drama club in school for students who are interested in both subjects (French and drama) to run weekly during the lunch break or after school between November - March. They will have 4 months to prepare a 5-10 minute performance on the pre-determined theme - this year the prop to be used is a 'flip flop'!

This will culminate with a fun performance for all – pupils will perform their production on stage and share it with other participants, friends and families at the festival in March! Three prizes will be awarded to winners – for Best Acting, Best Language Skills and Creativity.

Cultural Studies and Modern Languages online course receives Award for Education

Congratulations to Gloria Visintini and the rest of the Bristol MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) team!

On June 26th, the Cultural Studies and Modern Languages MOOC was awarded the University of Bristol Award for Education in the Faculty of Arts.

The course is a great introduction to the discipline and highly recommended for prospective students or interested friends and family.

It ran the first time for four weeks between February and March 2015. It attracted 14,622 registrations and received a lot of positive feedback from learners. Indeed, over 90% of people who took the post-course survey rated their overall experience of the course good or excellent. 96.43% of respondents said the course met or exceeded their expectations.

Thanks to Routes into Languages' funding, the MOOC will run again on 12th September 2016 for the fourth time. For more information or to register please visit https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/cultural-studies
