French Speaking Day for Years 8 & 9 pupils

This is an opportunity for pupils who enjoy their French lessons to practice their speaking skills using a range of fun and innovative activities. There will be experienced language teachers to help with pronunciation and fluency and the low adult to student ratio ensures students speak as much French as possible during the day.

 Times: 9.30 am - 3 pm

 Cost: £32 per pupil

Programme: 
Speaking successfully in another language requires improving confidenceand lots of practice; these are the main focus for the day. During the morning we will equip pupils with new vocabulary which will be used in earnest during the games sessions in the afternoon.
 
Criteria for identifying participants: pupils should enjoy their French lessons in school and wish to learn new words as well as wishing to improve their pronunciation.
 
What you will achieve:
Extended knowledge of French and new confidence in speaking the language.

Introduction to Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture

This is suitable for complete beginners of any age, staff members are also welcome provided they are beginners too!
 

These classes are free of charge but participants have to make their own way to the Plymouth Business School.

Spanish Masterclass (Year 9/10)

An opportunity to spend the morning reinforcing your knowledge of Spanish and to practise the spoken language in an informal and relaxing environment as well as to interact with pupils from other schools in the area.

 

Classes are taught by qualified native speakers who are associate Lecturers at Plymouth University.

 

The day will run from 9.45 am to 1 pm.

 

This is a joint event with WP department at Plymouth University.

Programme: 

Main objectives:

- To enthuse Year 9/10  MFL students about studying languages leading to increased interest in selecting a language at GCSE level.

- To inform pupils of the many benefits of having a second language for their future education and career options. 

- To strengthen relationships between the university and languages departments in local schools.

Christmas Lecture (German)

The German department at Bristol University is inviting teachers of German and students studying German to attend a Christmas Lecture on Monday 7 December at 6pm
Professor Nicola McLelland, University of Nottingham  with special 'Meet the Lecturer' event for school teachers and pupils beginning at 4.30 pm.
 
​Very advanced notice for the Germanists: our annual Christmas lecture will this year be given by Professor Nicola McLelland, who will be speaking  on 'Language Learning, the English and the Germans, 1500-2000' -  a topic which will appeal to those engaged in language learning and teaching in 2015!
 
Professor McLelland's book on this subject was published earlier  this year (for more information see ​http://www.harrassowitz-verlag.de/title_832.ahtml) and we are delighted to be able to welcome her to Bristol to tell us more. The lecture will be preceded by a special 'Meet the Lecturer' event with tea / coffee and cake for school teachers and pupils, and followed by our traditional Lebkuchen and Gluehwein reception.

Commemorating 25 years since German reunification

You're invited to commemorate 25 years since German reunification with an exhibition of posters  'Der Weg zur Deutschen Einheit' provided by the Stiftung Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur (the poster texts will be in English), and a screening of the recent film adaptation of Clemens Meyer's 2006 novel Als wir traeumten (for more information: http://www.alswirtraeumten.de/).
 
Meyer's novel was a sensation on its release (referred to as 'the German Trainspotting') and the film has had excellent reviews in Germany. The film has a 12 rating and will not have English subtitles; however, a short introduction setting it in context will be provided for students.
 
Sixth formers studying German and teachers of German are warmly invited to attend this event. The screening will be followed by refreshments.

The event will be held on Friday 2 October 2015 at 6pm at the University of Bristol (17 Woodland Road, LT3).

 

MFL Speaking Competition - closing date for registrations

Three sub-regional finals in Bath, Barnstaple and Swindon

We are inviting secondary students across the South West to take part in our extremely popular MFL Speaking Competition! Three sub-regional finals will be held in March in various locations:

The Royal High School, Bath Date: Tuesday 1st March

Nova Hreod Academy, Swindon Date: Monday 7th March

Pilton Community College, Barnstaple Date: Wednesday 9th March
 
All winners and runners-up from the sub-regional finals will be invited to compete at the Regional Final on Wednesday 29th June 2016 at the University of Bath. 
 

This competition is open to students of secondary age from any SW school and will provide an opportunity for students to use their foreign language out of the classroom. The competition will run in two categories: Non-native speakers and Near-native speakers in KS3-5 but if any categories do not attract sufficient numbers we reserve the right to withdraw them.

Students may present at any level in French, German or Spanish. We also accept entries in other languages but we reserve the right to withdraw them if we are unable to find judges.

European Day of Languages
