Language Ads Up

Date:
Thursday, 18 June, 2015 - 00:00
Event Type:
Workshop
Region:
South East
Location:
University of Sussex

The University of Sussex Centre for Language Studies invites Year 9/10 students studying Modern Languages to an Advertising workshop day on campus on Thursday 18th June.

This activity aims to introduce students to the principles of advertising and marketing through the creative use of a modern language.

After an initial group welcome and introductory talk from an employer, students will work in target language workshops with University language tutors to analyse target language adverts before producing their own advert. The adverts may be created in different formats, such as poster, packaging, webpage, radio or film clip etc.

Following a bring-your-own picnic lunch - outside if the weather permits - students will work on the group presentation of their morning activity. These will then be displayed digitally during a plenary session in a lecture theatre before departure.

The finished adverts will be available for display on campus, in schools and on the Routes into Languages website.

Six languages are offered:

  • French - non-beginners
  • German - non-beginners
  • Italian - beginners/non-beginners
  • Spanish - non-beginners
  • Arabic - beginners
  • Chinese - beginners/non-beginners
  • Japanese - beginners/non-beginners

Places, split across the different language groups, will initially be limited to 12 per school.

If you are interested in taking part in this event, please complete the registration form stating the number of places you require and the target language or languages your students will work in.

Please note that a cancellation policy applies to this event. A charge of £5 per place booked will be charged if there are any no-shows on the day or if places are not cancelled within two weeks of the event (i.e. by 4th June 2015).

Language learning and work placements for students of other subjects

The aim of thematic strand is to produce a package of materials (both electronic and hard copy) aimed at students and teachers/lecturers in schools/universities to promote the uptake of study time spent abroad as part of a main programme of study. The idea behind the materials is that, although they are located at specific institutions, the materials are generic and could be used by any institution in the UK to promote study time abroad. The document currently in production (provisionally entitled Student Voices) is a working document which aims to be completed by July 2016.

Success for South East Spellers

Region:
South East

By Clare Forder, Project Manager of Routes South-East

On April 17th 2015, over 160 year 7 students from 44 schools across the South East came together at the University of Brighton for the annual Routes into Languages South Spelling Bee regional final. Part of a national initiative to enthuse and motivate young language learners, the Spelling Bee encourages students to learn up to 200 words in either French, Spanish or German.

With the regional final in Brighton one of the largest in the country, students were understandably apprehensive as they stepped forward to take their turn in the spotlight. However, their efforts certainly paid off, with the standard of this year’s entrants higher than ever before. Students wowed the audience with their pronunciation and spelling, impressing even the native speaker judges presiding over the competition. Carmen Broadbridge, lecturer in Spanish and French at the University of Brighton, said, “I am very impressed by the level of spelling these young students are capable of”. Student ambassador, Emily Rowe, said “they are only 11 or 12 years old but so confident in the target language”.

Feedback from participating students certainly highlights their enjoyment of the event. For many, this was their first visit to a university campus, so although some were nervous at the beginning, they explained how they had had fun learning all the new words and found the whole experience of the competition exciting. Routes South project manager and competition organiser, Clare Forder, said, “it’s wonderful to see so many new language learners taking part in this competition. I am already looking forward to next year!”.

A strong team of spellers will now represent the South East in all three languages at the national final at Anglia Ruskin University on July 3rd. One student, Poppy Wehrle (Cokethorpe School) will even compete in both the French and Spanish finals.

If you are interested in taking part in next year’s Foreign Language Spelling Bee, please contact Clare Forder at the University of Brighton for more details: c.l.forder@brighton.ac.uk.
