Day of the Dead - Year 12 - COMPACT PLUS SCHOOLS/COLLEGES ONLY

Year 12 Spanish students are invited to a twilight session at the University of Brighton to find out more about the Mexican festival of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

In an introduction to studying languages at university, students will take part in a sample lecture about the festival, its origins and how it is celebrated in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries. Participants will learn about the culture and beliefs underpinning the festival and will engage in discussions comparing Mexican notions of death and celebration with those of their own country. Useful target language vocabulary and phrases will be sent out in advance of the event so that students can aim to use them during the workshop.

Food and drink typically consumed during this celebration will also be provided.

The workshop is free and will run from 4.30-6.00pm.

Open to Year 9 Spanish students, the aim of this cultural workshop is to find out more about the Mexican festival of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Participants will learn about the festival and how it is celebrated in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries and will also complete target-language worksheets. Other activities on offer include traditional crafts such as mask decorating and puppet making.

The session is free and will run from 10.30-12.30. Please note a maximum number of 10 places per school is available.

The Gold Award for Languages - teacher information session

Teachers from schools in the Routes South region are invited to the University of Brighton to find out more about our exciting languages award programme, The Gold Award for Languages.

The award comprises three challenge strands (work experience, personal and community) which students must complete in order to earn the award. Participants use the European Languages Portfolio to document their progress and record evidence of completing each strand.

To find out more about this exciting opportunity for students and how to implement it in school, come along to our twilight information session - 4.00-5.30pm.

Each participating school will then also be invited to bring a selected number of students back to the university for a student training session later in the term.

German Christmas Craft & Music event - Years 7-9

Students of German in years 7, 8 and 9 are invited to the University of Brighton to take part in a German Christmas Craft and Music workshop.

Activities include making wishing stars and learning traditional German Christmas songs - all an excellent way to practise using the target language. Glühwein (non-alcoholic!) and Würstchen will also be offered!

The session is free and will run from 12.00-2.30pm.

European Day of Languages Music/Singing session - Seahaven Academy

Led by community musician, Julie Nye, Year 7 students will participate in a music and singing session to celebrate the European Day of Languages. Students will learn traditional songs from France, Germany and Spain in their respective target languages and will perform in groups.

Abingdon Languages Festival

Hosted by Fitzharry's School, Oxford and supported by Routes into Languages South, the Abingdon Languages Festival brings secondary and primary school pupils together to celebrate language learning. Older students will plan and prepare activity stalls, which will be visited by younger learners throughout the day.
