Post-16 students from targeted colleges across Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and the wide Hampshire area are invited to attend an intercultural awareness day delivered by a combination of academic staff and final year students returning from their study abroad period. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the potential academic, cultural, intercultural, linguistic, personal and professional benefits associated with studying and living abroad.
The event is free and will run from 1-5pm.
The post-16 translation and interpreting taster is open to A Level and AS Level students currently studying a language. The event offers attendees the opportunity to participate in both translation and interpreting workshops linked to their chosen language of study. It also offers them the chance to learn more about careers in these areas. The workshops are led by experienced translators and interpreters. Also on offer are campus tours and halls visits.
The event is free and will run from 9.30am-2pm.
Programme to follow.
* INVITE ONLY EVENT *
This event provides an opportunity for year 7 & 8 pupils to learn a new language and to highlight how language learning can open doors to a wide variety of experiences.
Pupils will take part in a variety of activities run by Languge & Area Studies students as well as international students. Each activity will contain elements of culture, history and personal experiences from countries around the world.
Maximum of 10 places per school.
This event provides year 8 pupils with a chance to develop their language skills. In the morning, there is an intensive mini-project in French, German or Spanish, led by the university’s trainee language teachers. In the afternoon, there is a taster in a new language such as Portuguese or Chinese, plus a talk about languages and how they can be useful in the world of work. Throughout the day, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet and talk to our current students.
The event will run from 9am-2.30pm.
Notes
There is a strict limit of 10 students from each school for this event, due to its huge popularity.
Lunch is NOT provided for students on the day.
There will be a short teacher forum on the day, to discuss how the university’s languages staff can support you and languages at your school.
Registration is confirmed once a booking form has been completed. Please contact Zena Hilton or Marie Weaver at languagessoutheast@soton.ac.uk to request one.
*** Please note that you may only attend one of the two days offered ***
