World of Work - Year 8/9

Routes into Christmas - 6th form event

Routes into Christmas is an after-school event for 6th formers based on a Christmas theme. It offers sample lectures in French, German or Spanish to give an idea of what studying languages at university might be like, with the opportunity to speak to tutors in the languages department. A taster session in a more unusual language is also provided, as well as an introduction to translating and interpreting.

The workshop will run from 16.00-19.00.

European Day of Languages poster competition

Help celebrate this year's European Day of Languages (26.09.15) by entering our poster competition! Simply choose a word relating to the European Day of Languages, translate it  into a foreign language of your choice and then illustrate it.

Entries should be on one side of A4 paper/card and contain one word. Illustrations should be done by hand.

Please make sure your name, school and year group are written on the front of your entry, with your teacher's name and email address on the back.

One entry per person.

Starting Work as a Translator or Interpreter

GCSE, A Level and undergraduate students from Portsmouth and the surrounding area are invited to the University of Portsmouth for an information day on working as a translator or interpreter.

A series of 20 minute presentations on career prospects in these fields will be given by leading professionals and will be followed by Q&A sessions. Practical sessions involving translation and interpreting skills will be given in the afternoon.

Pompey in the Community Football Project

Year 9 students will spend the day at Portsmouth Study Centre and at Fratton Park to prepare for and deliver two challenges:

  • Creating a multimedia video in a target language to attract a striker to the football club
  • To create a presentation in the target language to lure the player

The videos will be uploaded to a blog and the one with the most views by 9th October 2015 will win a prize. Presentations will take place on the day of the event in the afternoon.

This event is designed to help students use the target language with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity. It will also help prepare them for GCSE and further study.

Students attending the Year 12 study day will be offered sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, plus the chance to do an ab initio session in another language (such as Chinese or Portuguese). There will also be a student panel session, where your students can ask our students about studying languages at university, and find out first-hand about the year abroad etc.

The event will run from 9.30am-3.00pm.

PLEASE NOTE

Schools/colleges can attend one event.

Events can be attended by just the students, but you must advise us in advance if this will be the case.

Lunch is NOT provided for students on the day.

Places at these events are subject to completion of a booking form. Please contact Marie Weaver at languagessoutheast@soton.ac.uk to ask for one.

Radio Broadcasting in French/Spanish/German

Are you interested in using French, Spanish or German for professional purposes? Tutors and language students from the Sussex Centre for Language Studies, in collaboration with the School of Media, invite 6th Form students onto campus for a language and media workshop.

You will have the opportunity to use professional media editing studios and facilities in the School of Media, Film and Music to create your own broadcast-quality radio show in French, German or Spanish. The show will take the form of an interview centring on the "Third Year Abroad" experience and/or university life.

During 2013-14 language students at Sussex created and designed three radio shows which were broadcast and podcast on the popular French Radio London: www.frenchradiolondon.com.

The workshop is free and will run from 9.30am to 2pm on the University of Sussex campus.
