Period Abroad in Spain (Session 2) *CANCELLED*

This activity aims to encourage students to take up Spanish (or to continue with the subject) after leaving school or in their first year at University. It involves a group of OU undergraduates who have recently spent a period of study in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, giving an insight into their period abroad experiences and discussing aspects of language and cultural learning in an online forum for a period of one week. Our undergraduates are mature students with experience of work. Therefore, aspects such as “using languages in the work environment”, “the importance of intercultural communication”, will be part of the discussion.

Students can exchange information and ask questions about aspects of Spanish language and cultures.

This event involves a presentation session (15th January 2014) followed by a week's worth of online follow-up activities (15th-22nd January 2014). Twenty places are available. Please click on the registration link below to sign up.

Language Tutoring Programme - now closed

Language Tutoring consists of Royal Holloway students assisting pupils in schools during their Modern Foreign Languages lessons.  Our dual objectives are to assist pupils in boosting their attainment, and to generate increased enthusiasm for Languages amongst pupils, in education and beyond. Tutors will visit a school over a set period of time, spending several hours there per week. Times are flexible and the scheme will run between November 2013 and July 2014.

Language Tutors are offered based on their availability, so several may be available to work with several classes.

Experience Languages at Royal Holloway

This one-day event (running from 10am-3pm) on campus, funded by Royal Holloway and Routes into Languages, will give Year 8 pupils a miniature experience of studying a language at university. It will develop their skills in the language they currently study, give them a taster session of another language, and inform them about the opportunities that speaking another language can offer.

Ten places per school are available.

Royal Holloway’s cancellation policy for Outreach events will apply. Notice of any cancellations must be given one month prior to the event so that the places can be filled, otherwise a cancellation fee will be levied, and the school will be placed on a reserve list for future events.

Undergraduate primary trainees from the University of Winchester will develop and teach a scheme of work for French, exploring strategies and contexts which will enable the children to use the foreign language for real purposes.

European Day of Languages Poster Competition

Help celebrate the European Day of Languages this year (26.09.13) by taking part in our poster competition. Entering is simple – all you need to do is choose a word relating to the European Day of Languages, translate it into a foreign language of your choice and then illustrate it.

RULES

  • One word (and its article if appropriate) per page;

 

  • One side of A4 paper to be used only;

 

  • Your chosen word must appear in your artwork;

 

  • Illustrations to be done by hand i.e. not computer-generated;

 

  • Name, school and year group should be written on the front of your artwork and your teacher’s name and email address should be written on the back;

 

  • Only one entry per person;

 

  • Winners will receive their prizes by post;

 

The closing date for entries is 2pm on Friday 25th October 2013. Artwork will be judged during the following week and winners will be notified by email on Thursday 31st October 2013.

Four prizes  will be awarded to the best piece of artwork and the most imaginative word in two categories: years 7-9 and years 10-13 - will you be a winner?!

There are sessions on cultural topics, grammar and speaking in French, German or Spanish, plus the chance to do an ab initio session in another language (such as Chinese or Portuguese). There will also be a student panel session, where your students can ask our students about studying languages at university, and find out first-hand about the year abroad etc.

These events will run from 9.30am-3.00pm.

Schools/colleges can attend one out of the 3 events in the year.

Events can be attended by just the students, but you must advise us in advance if this will be the case.

 

Lunch is NOT provided for students on the day.

There will be a short teacher forum on the day, to discuss how the university’s languages staff can support you and languages at your school/college.

Year 8 Able Linguist day *** WAITING LIST ONLY ***

This event provides year 8 pupils with a chance to develop their language skills. In the morning, there is an intensive mini-project in French, German or Spanish, led by the university’s trainee language teachers. In the afternoon, there is a taster in a new language such as Portuguese or Chinese, plus a talk about languages and how they can be useful in the world of work. Throughout the day, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet and talk to our current students.

The event will run from 9am-2.30pm.

There is a strict limit of 10 students from each school for this event, due to its huge popularity.
