The Norwich City Football Club educational team is delighted to be able to offer a new programme for school children: the NCFC Spanish Double Club.  Devised in partnership with Routes Into Languages East and with the support of Arsenal FC and the Consejeria de Education at the Spanish Embassy, Spanish Double Club is a unique and innovative way of developing an enthusiasm for speaking languages amongst your pupils.

Each session lasts 90 minutes and builds towards making pupils competent at asking/answering basic questions and holding a conversation (which will make them  secure at Level 3).  Each session is spilt into 2 halves- the first half practising Spanish in the classroom, the 2nd half on the pitch practising languages whilst playing football!  The resources contain exclusive images of NCFC players, use recent matches for added excitement, and (best of all) an NCFC Spanish Champion will attend each session and then lead the Spanish themed football sessions for you!

The course is designed to be completely flexible and is suitable for both complete beginners and students who need a bit more support to get to level 3.  It could be run as an after-school club, as PPE cover or as part of a normal language lesson in school.  And as an introductory offer, it will only cost £780 if you book before the end of September.

See below for a flyer giving more information, and a sample set of resources so you can see yourself how fantastic they are.  If you have any queries or you would like Paul Wickens to visit your school to talk through how Spanish Double Club could support your students, please contact him directly:

Sing to the Future – Language really does Beat!!!

Region:
East of England

What an exciting final it was for the Routes East Sing to the Future: Language BeatZ final! Four schools were represented on the day: Comberton Village College, Birchwood High School, Hinchingbrooke School and Sawtry Village College.

The competition involves Year 8 pupils transferring language from the KS3 curriculum into catchy, memorable song lyrics, and thus practise and improve their foreign language skills (any language they are learning in school). It’s all about harnessing the power of music for learning.  Music, rhythm and song make words memorable.

The project was the brainchild of Rachel Hawkes of Comberton Village College. Using the idea that  music creatively in groups for language learning is both motivating and effective, together with Routes East, she put together a project that initially just helps teachers to start using music a little in class, if they never have before and using the specially created Teacher’s Pack, supports them towards working with their pupils to create songs, which can then be entered into the competition.  It certainly seems to work, judging by the 80 pupils who reached the final!

The pupils had all been practising hard and it showed. It was a nail-biting finish with 3 songs singled out by the judges, Dr Tony Morgan, Director of Routes East, Maria Weber and Sabine Mayeux (past and present Student Language Ambassadors and Comberton’s Tour Gourmand du Monde and Birchwood’s Spanish song were pipped to the post by Birchwood’s German song. (click to listen).

The competition now moves on to the next stage with a People’s Vote, ending on 21st July.

Welcome to the Languages Challenge!

It has now been validated as part of the National Children's University for those people registered on the programme! On successful completion of the Languages Challenge with 100 points, you will be able to claim 10 hours for your Children's University portfolio.

It's also part of Language Futures - click here for more information

The Languages Challenge has been created to support and reward pupils who love languages and want to use their languages creatively in their own time. Pupils complete a series of tasks and present the evidence to the designated Routes into Languages teacher in their school.

The Languages Challenge gives you the chance to complete all sorts of language based tasks so you can improve your knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures.

The Languages Challenge was devised by Vincent Everett of Northgate School Dereham as an invitation to pupils to become independent learners. With Languages Challenge you can learn new words and evaluate different strategies for doing so. You can hunt down your own resources and let us know what they think of them. You can use your language in a hobby or interest of your own. You can organize language events with your friends. And you can do things we would never have thought of....!

The Languages Challenge is for any pupil wanting to work on their languages according to their own interests, needs and personal circumstances. We are looking for commitment, creativity and enthusiasm. You may have an older pupil to act as mentor, who will help you along the way. You can use it for any language - either one you're learning at school, but want to explore further or perhaps one you speak  at home.

There are 7 categories:

  • Learning the Basics,
  • Using your Talents,
  • Research,
  • Culture,
  • Creativity,
  • Resources,
  • Futures.

Each category has a choice of tasks. You must complete at least one task from each category.

Tasks are worth 5,10 or 15 points. To successfully complete the Languages Challenge, you are aiming for a total of 100 points.

You must keep evidence of each task in your portfolio. This could be in the form of photographs, videos, or writing. You will also need to write up an overall self-evaluation explaining what you have achieved and what you have learnt. The whole portfolio will be submitted to the designated Routes into Languages East teacher in your school. You may be asked to choose one of your outcomes to be performed, shown or presented to parents and visitors at the Children's University Graduation Ceremony or a celebration in your school.

Unfortunately, now that government funding for Routes into Languages has ended, we're having to charge for most of our projects. The cost of the Languages Challenge is £25 for state schools and £50 for non-state schools. Please use this link to pay for your school's entry fee before registering for this year's Languages Challenge https://languageprojects.github.io/

Supporter 2 Reporter - Olympic Inspiration

Region:
East of England

Earlier this year we held the launch of the first Supporter 2 Reporter language project. This latest Routes into Languages East project, involved the training of five local secondary school pupils as sports journalists in Spanish, German and French preparing for the 2012 Olympics. The Year 10 pupils, Ruby and Aneesh from Comberton Village College, Shoaib and Jordan from Netherhall, and Ben from Parkside were trained by Supporter 2 Reporter trainer, Sarah Birchall, in reporting skills, such as interviewing, video and audio recording, and editing. They received language support throughout the course from Routes East Student Language Ambassadors, Ines Navarro, a Spanish tutor from Anglia Ruskin, Lisa Sumaski, an MA student at Anglia Ruskin, and Lea le Cloarec, an intern student from France on a 3-month work placement with Alliance Francaise in Cambridge. They provided invaluable help, as well as being excellent language role models.

The project began when Sarah Schechter, Routes into Languages East Project Manager saw an inspirational presentation by young Supporter 2 Reporters (trainee sports reporters) at a 2012 Olympics Inspire Mark networking event (Routes East was awarded an Inspire Mark for its Language and Sport activities). She was so impressed by what she saw that she contacted the Director, Damian Payton, to discuss the possibility of developing a language orientated course. The pilot project was launched a few months later

The highlight of the course was the visit to BBC Cambridgeshire, where the aspiring sports journalists were given a guided tour while taking the opportunity to interview a broad range of journalists and others working in radio and TV. The journalists all said how strange it was to be on the other side of the microphone..!  They also readily gave the pupils advice on how to get into TV and radio. When asked if they thought languages were important, they all felt that they definitely were and had interesting stories to illustrate the point.

On day 4 of the course the young reporters attended an international football tournament organised by Routes East, with players from Anglia Ruskin University and The Girton Academy of English. The exciting match, Europe v the Rest of the World, ended 6-4 to Europe with the pupils taking the opportunity to commentate and interview players and spectators. They then edited all the footage, and put together their stories and articles with the video and audio from the two days on the Supporter 2 Reporter website (www.radiowaves/s2rroutesintolanguages).

Anglia Ruskin University media students, Mo and Nuvia, filmed the training, so that it will be available to others from Routes into Languages East in the future

The Supporter 2 Reporter language reporters now join the rest of the Supporter 2 Reporter team in the run up to the Olympics

New Routes East Project Kicks Off!!!

Region:
East of England

The latest Routes into Languages East project enjoyed a very exciting launch last week – on the pitch, during half-time of the Norwich v Chelsea premiership match. It’s the latest Language & Football venture – based on Arsenal Double Club, it uses football to motivate pupils to learn languages.

This new project, backed by Norwich City Spanish defender, Daniel Ayala, will give students the chance to learn the language via Norwich City themed lessons and workbooks.

The project has been developed by Routes East in partnership with Norfolk County Council and Norwich City FC's Study Support Centre and will initially support 20 students from City Academy Norwich who are learning Spanish.

The programme is aimed at encouraging students to develop their understanding of the Spanish language and culture and the students at City Academy, Norwich have already starting learning some Spanish in extra lessons and on their own, using the CULP4SC (Cambridge University Language Programme for Schools & Colleges) materials, that have been part of Routes East activity for the past three years, in readiness for the programme.

Spanish Double Club will see Year 8 pupils take part in two hours of Spanish lessons each week, all themed around Norwich City.  One hour will be in the classroom and one will be out on the pitch combining Spanish with football skills.

This project brings together three of the five Routes East partners, as the University of East Anglia will be providing the Student Language Ambassador, Chris Holmes, who will be the main deliverer of Spanish, working with Norwich City FC Study Centre Manager, Paul Wickens.

The new programme kicked-off with a special fiesta event at the Study Support Centre on Monday, with pupils enjoying Spanish food-tasting and a chance to sample Spanish culture, followed by a guided tour of the stadium in English and Spanish before preparing to be journalists at a press conference with Daniel Ayala see http://www.itv.com/anglia/strength-to-strenght84926/ They each introduced themselves in Spanish and asked him questions in both languages about Spain and about himself (including one on his salary, which he declined to answer!). The day was attended by David McNally, Chief Executive of Norwich City Football Club and Maria Jose Eguskiza from the Spanish Embassy Education Office together with Dr Tony Morgan, Director of Routes East and Sarah Schechter, Project Manager.

Lessons will be held at City Academy every Friday from 24 February.
