The Language Resource Centre at Newcastle University has a small team in place, which will be available from Mid-January for virtual school visits, synchronous and asynchronous to promote language learning, and inter-cultural activities in line with the Routes into Languages aims. Using Wortmann's 2003 film Das Wunder von Bern (The Miracle from Bern) as a focus , we will address themes including family, relationships, looking in particular at the interests of young people in popular culture. The film will also be used as a basis for speaking and listening exercises, discussion and role-play, providing lots of fun opportunities to practice your German, to talk about film, and to work with other German speakers. Resources are provided beforehand for the school to refer to and then to build on after this event. Led by Dr Tobias Hochscherf, Northumbria University.

AS into A2 A-Level Masterclass with Taster

This event comprises a languages talk, an A-Level masterclass in either French, German or Spanish and a taster session. The languages talk aims at motivating pupils towards further study of languages by highlighting the career options and different study paths available.

The A-Level masterclass in the morning session offers two hour of intensive language work with university language teachers. There is the option for two hours of the same language or one hour of each language for dual linguists.

The taster session provides an introduction to Chinese, a visit to the Oriental Museum at Durham and exclusive access to the museum's handling collection, thus providing an insight into Chinese language and culture.

Year 12 Lezioni di cioccolato - An introduction to Italian language, culture ... and chocolate!

As part of the N.I.C.E. Italian film festival hosted by the Italian department at Durham University, Routes into Languages North East will be running a two hour taster session in Italian ahead of the opening night of the film festival. The opening screening is of Claudio Cupellini's 'Lezioni di cioccolato', 'Lessons in chocolate'. This taster session is primarily aimed at Year 12/13 pupils and will provide a taste of the language and culture of Italy centred around the theme of the film - chocolate. The taster session will also give pupils an opportunity to meet the film director himself

No previous knowledge of Italian is required.

Booking is required for the masterclass, but the film festival is free and open to all.
