Pop Video Competition 2013

Do you think you could write a song or rap in a foreign language? Do you have the IT skills to make a video to accompany your song? If so… this competition is for you.

The Routes into Languages South West project is inviting you to submit a short video, animated if you prefer, to accompany a song or rap which you have composed in a foreign language. The competition is open to students between the ages of 11-18, in full time education and will be judged in two categories: 11-14 and 15-18.

The winning entry will receive a prize of £100 and a trophy. Three runners up in each category will receive £50. We will videostream your video on the Routes into Languages South West YouTube website. And there is a special prize - The Online Viewers' Award! You will have a chance to vote for your favourite video. The details about it will be posted on our YouTube website before the closing date. The award presentation ceremony will be held on 26th June at the University of Exeter.

The closing date for entries is Friday 19th April 2013.

MFL Speaking Competition 2013

Routes into Languages SW is supporting MFL Speaking Competitions in various parts of the region:

Nova Hreod School, Swindon                     Date: Wednesday 6th March 2013

Pilton College, Barnstaple                          Date: Friday 8th March 2013

The Royal High School, Bath                      Date: Monday 11th March 2013        

And the Regional Final will be held on Wednesday 26th June 2013 in Exeter!

The competition is open to students of secondary age from any SW school and will provide an opportunity for students to use their foreign language out of the classroom. The competition will run in two categories: Non-native speakers and Near-native speakers. Students may present at any level in French, German or Spanish. This year we’ll also accept entries in other languages but if any categories do not attract sufficient numbers we reserve the right to withdraw them. Please download the poster for further information.

The closing date for entries is Friday 8th February 2013.

This event is sponsored by Oxford University Press, which donated all dictionaries to be given to winners and runners-up.

The format of each event will be as follows (times may vary):

Training Workshop for French Assistants (see Bristol French Drama Festival)

Routes into Languages SW is delighted to offer secondary schools an exciting opportunity to take part in the new initiative -- Bristol French Drama Festival, which will take place on Saturday 16th March 2013 at the University of the West of England.

Your French assistant can learn to run a theatre club in French for your pupils, culminating with a fun performance for all! Pupils will perform a piece prepared in their drama club and share it with other participants, friends and families!

The training workshop for French assistants will be held on Friday 19th October at the University of the West of England at 1.30 - 4 pm. This will give them the confidence and numerous ideas to develop a drama club in your school. Your assistant and the pupils will then have 5 months to prepare a short piece, which they will perform on stage on Saturday 16th March. (There may be the opportunity for subsequent informal meetings in between.)

Cost: £20 per assistant

Please note that this session is not suitable for teachers of French. The training workshop for French teachers who intend to run drama clubs in schools and take part in the festival in March will be held later on the same day (at 4.30 - 6.30 pm).

Bristol French Drama Festival

Languages Day (Yr 11-13)

The event is aimed mainly at Yr 12 students, but Years 11 and 13 are also invited to attend. The aim is to encourage students to continue with their study of languages and to show them what learning languages at university is like. The day will introduce more specifically how languages are taught at Bristol university and also give general information sessions on various topics, such as the year abroad, how to write a good UCAS statement and others.

The day will start at 10-10.30 and finish at about 3.30-4pm. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

 

Programme: 

Students will be divided into groups of approximately 15-20, and each group - accompanied by a student ambassador - will do a session in a language they are already studying, a taster session in a language they have never studied before and a session on culture/ history/ literature/ politics. They will also have a session with final year students and have an opportunity to ask questions about the year abroad and life at university. In the closing session students will have a chance to talk to Admissions department about personal statements, and there will also be some tips about strategies for language learning. And during the lunch break student ambassadors will take different groups on tour around the university.

Year 5 pupils from the local primary school will spend the day on the university campus, which will include a session with student ambassadors, a Spanish session and a campus tour as well as some fun games and activities.

This language day is offered to Year 12 students and invites them to come and sample what it’s like to learn languages at university. Students will be offered sessions in language and culture in French, German or Spanish, and will also be able to have a taster session in an unfamiliar language. There will be the opportunity of finding out more about the year abroad, a visit to the Foreign Language Centre and the possibility of learning a language ab initio.

Same programme run on both days, schools pick ONE day.
