We are looking for motivated language students or students who are native speakers of foreign languages to work in secondary schools in the South West!

 

MFL Speaking Competition 2014

Three sub-regional finals in Bath, Barnstaple and Swindon

We are again inviting secondary students across the South West to take part in our extremely popular MFL Speaking Competition! Three sub-regional finals will be held in March in various locations:

Nova Hreod College, Swindon Date: Tuesday 18th March 2014

Pilton Community College, Barnstaple Date: Monday 24th March 2014

The Royal High School, Bath Date: Thursday 27th March 2014

All winners and runners-up from the sub-regional finals will be invited to compete at the Regional Final on Wednesday 25th June at the University of Bath. 

This competition is open to students of secondary age from any SW school and will provide an opportunity for students to use their foreign language out of the classroom. The competition will run in two categories: Non-native speakers and Near-native speakers in KS3-5 but if any categories do not attract sufficient numbers we reserve the right to withdraw them.

Students may present at any level in French, German or Spanish. We also accept entries in other languages but we reserve the right to withdraw them if we are unable to find judges.

The closing date for entries is Friday 7th February 2014

We are very grateful to Oxford University Press for donating prizes for this competition.

 

Programme: 

The format of each event will be as follows (times may vary):

9:45                 Arrival and Registration

10:00               KS3 Non-native and Near-native – 1-2 minute presentation on “My Family”, “My Hometown” or “My Hobbies”

11:30               KS4 Non-native – 2 minute presentation on “My Holiday”, “A Film I Enjoyed” or “Health & Fitness”

12:30               Lunch

13:00               KS4 Near-native – see KS4 above

13:30               KS5 Non-native and Near-native – 3 minute presentation on “My Dream” or a topic of your choice

14:30               Judging

15:00               Results and Award of Prizes

MFL Pop Video Competition 2014

Do you think you could write a song or rap in a foreign language? Do you have the IT skills to make a video to accompany your song? If so… this competition is for you.

The Routes into Languages South West project is inviting you to submit a short video, animated if you prefer, to accompany a song or rap which you have composed in a foreign language. The competition is open to students between the ages of 11-18, in full time education and will be judged in two categories: 11-14 and 15-18.

The winning entry will receive a prize of £100 and a trophy. Three runners up in each category will receive £50. We will videostream your video on the Routes into Languages South West YouTube website. And there is a special prize - The Online Viewers' Award! You will have a chance to vote for your favourite video. The details about it will be posted on our YouTube website before the closing date. The award presentation ceremony will be held on Wednesday 25th June at the University of Bath.

NEW: Based on requests from schools, the closing date has been extended to 10 am Friday 16th May!!

Spanish Masterclass (Year 9/10)

An opportunity to spend the morning reinforcing your knowledge of Spanish and to practise the spoken language in

an informal and relaxing environment as well as to interact with pupils from other schools in the area. 

Classes are taught by qualified native speakers who are associate Lecturers at Plymouth University.

The day will run from 9.45 am to 1 pm.

French Masterclass (Year 9/10)

These classes are free but participants have to pay for their own transport to the Plymouth Business School.

The day will run from 9.45 am to 1 pm.
