North West

Routes into Languages North West is holding a workshop at Manchester Metropolitan University to bring together language teachers and university staff to share good teaching practice, meet one another, and more generally to support each other in maintaining the health of the subject. A workshop open to all language teachers to come and share new ideas and subject expertise, including our own – teaching languages through film. Additional topics up for discussion are:

• Responding to syllabus changes at GCSE and / or A-level,
• Languages as an employability skill / teaching transferable skills through languages
• Developing speaking skills
• Teaching languages through literature

The cost is £10 per teacher (includes lunch).  The cost is subsidised by Routes into Languages North West and The Department of Languages, Information and Communications at MMU.  The event is free is to teachers providing a workshop.

Language Enrichment Event for Year 8 Pupils

Our ever-popular Language Enrichment Events for year 8 pupils are back. These are interactive, exciting events that encourage pupils to continue with their language studies at school and to think about the advantages of learning a new language or gaining a qualification in a language they may speak at home. These events have proved extremely popular with pupils and language teachers over the years and our research has shown a 24% increase in pupils taking language GCSEs after they attended the events. 

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages (e.g. Arabic and Mandarin) to encourage the learning of languages generally.

Cost per pupil: £5

Subsidised by Routes into Languages NW.

Priority will be given to schools that have not attended a Language Enrichment Event in previous years.

The Language League: Kick Off is a creative and unique initiative for young people to develop and enhance their language skills in French, German, Arabic or Spanish.  It offers an attractive and creative approach to language learning linked to the game of football.

The Language League: Kick Off teaching resources will help teachers deliver inspirational language lessons using our fun, interactive and engaging football themed resources.  Our Routes into Languages club (RiL FC) is comprised of an international community of animated players (male and female), manager, team mascot and home stadium.  The materials comprise a fully integrated package of teacher's notes, pupils' workbooks, PowerPoint presentations and additional printed material such as flashcards.  There is a small charge of £5 per pupil's workbook to cover the printing costs.

This is a year-round education programme, which uses film, moving image and contemporary art to enrich students’ learning and bring innovation to the classroom. Throughout the year we have a variety of MFL study sessions specially programmed to support GCSE, AS and A2 students of French, German, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu, all led by native language speakers.

Each study session uses film as an exciting and accessible way to encourage students to use their language skills. Students will enjoy a specially selected film, screened in the target language with English subtitles. Sessions are supported by contextualising introductions, which provide information about the themes and characters of the film along with information about the film's director and place within film history and culture. Following the film, students complete language exercises based on the film using their new vocabulary.

Films are selected to complement GCSE, AS and A2 specifications and provide excellent material for topic-based work and oral exam preparation.
