The COLT Project will be running 5 Language Enrichment Events (LEEs) again next Academic year. These events consist in a "Why Study Languages" talk, Taster Sessions in either Arabic/Urdu/Italian or Chinese, a Language Cultural Quiz, and a Multicultural Market of activities such as Belly Dancing, Origami, Chinese Painting and much more!

The Language Enrichment Events will be run for schools in which Language-learning is NOT compulsory at GCSE Level, and for Year 8 or Year 9 pupils who have NOT made their GCSE choices.

The LEEs will be held in all 5 partner institutions: Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), The University of Manchester, The University of Salford, Bolton University, and University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

The dates are yet to be confirmed, and we will send out all the relevant information in a mail-out in August.

Our Language Enrichment Events are interactive, exciting events that encourage pupils to continue with their language studies at school and to think about the advantages of learning a new language or gaining a qualification in a language they may speak at home. These events have proved extremely popular with pupils and language teachers over the past two years.

Events will be held at all five partner institutions and will include a talk entitled “Why Study Languages?”, two taster sessions in a new language (Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Urdu or Italian) and a multi-cultural market where pupils will learn more about different cultures. Student ambassadors from our partner institutions will talk to pupils about life at university and the advantages of studying a foreign language. Lunch is also included.

The events are open to any year 8 pupils who have not yet chosen to study languages at GCSE, from schools where languages are not compulsory. We are trying to achieve as much impact as possible so would suggest that you bring pupils who are less interested in languages, so that we can do our very best to change their minds!

These events are free of charge and we expect that they will book up quickly, so please return the booking form as soon as possible to reserve your places, indicating the event that your school would like to attend. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis, although priority will be given to those schools who have not yet been to a LEE, so that we can reach as many schools as possible. Due to limitations on space the maximum number of pupils per school is 25.

UCLAN, Preston would like to join in the European-wide celebrations of Languages by hosting their own European Day of Languages at UCLAN, Preston for years 9 to 12. This event aims to raise awareness of new languages for students studying modern foreign languages.

The Manchester Children's Book Festival will be taking place from 1-4th July from 10-3pm and the idea is to get the whole world reading continuously, no matter where you are.
 

Anyone can get involved by reading individually, with friends or organising school groups to read. To register your reading time, simply log on to http://www.manchesterchildrensbookfestival.co.uk/ and sign up to a slot. You can upload photos, videos or comments, and even get sponsorship to donate to a charity of your choice!
 

In Manchester, you can get involved by coming to the Manchester Children's Book Festival on Saturday 3rd July in Geoffrey Manton Building, at MMU. The COLT Project will have a Languages tent running from 10-3pm, with staff and students reading poetry and children's books in a variety of Languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish, Urdu and Sign Language!

This Top Up Course is for all the Mandarin ChineseTeacher Trainees who completed a Teacher Training course in Mandarin this Academic year, run by the COLT Project. The Course will consist in a one-day follow up workshop, free of charge.

This workshop will take place on Friday 11th June 2010 at the Didsbury campus. It will run from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

This course is an excellent opportunity for some top up training for Mandarin Chinese teachers.
