Essay Writing for Film for Spanish 'A' Level

Following feedback and specific requests from a number of language teachers in the area, we are organising for the 3rd year our workshop for A2 students (Spanish) on how to write an essay in the Foreign Language for the A Level examination (Culture/Film essay question).
 

In the second term, we will organise another one on Almodovar (Volver/ Todo sobre mi madre/ Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios [date tbc.]
 

Please note that places are limited and that the event will only run with a minimum of 50 students in each workshop (booking and payment are required before attending).

Fee: £10 per student, free for accompanying teacher.

2.30-3.20 First practice on character study using one film

Note: In order to make the most of these workshops, the students should have watched the film prior to attending this event.

Spanish AS and A2 Study Session: The Devil's Backbone

This session is open only to young people between 14 – 19 years old accompanied by their teachers.

Recommended for: AS / A2 and equivalent level Spanish Capacity: 158 places

Carmen Herrero will introduce the themes and historical background to El espinazo del diablo. Students will have the opportunity to discuss the events depicted in the film in Spanish, as well as completing AS/A2 Level language exercises. Discussion will focus on themes of the family, friendship, war, the horror film and ‘cine fantástico’, narrative and representation, and characters. Background information on Spanish and Mexican cinemas will be provided.

INSET: Using Film in the Classroom to Teach Languages

This course, supported by Links into Languages and FiLTA (Film in Language Teaching Association. www.filta.org.uk), is for all language teachers seeking innovative and effective strategies to enhance and enrich language learning for their pupils. Film has been shown to be a particularly stimulating and successful resource for language teachers at all levels: providing focus for discussion, access to vocabulary and even a suitable stimulus for speaking and writing assessment. With the aid of a ‘how to read a film’ guide, teachers will also be able to explore different filmic approaches, learn about models for using film in the language classroom, in addition to creating workable activities to be used to further enhance language learning for their pupils.

Recommended for: GCSE, AS, A2 and A Level language teachers of Arabic, English (TESOL/TEFL) French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish and Urdu

£30 per teacher (refreshments and lunch provided)

The ever popular Language Enrichment Events are back for summer 2011. Aimed at year 8 pupils, the events are designed to motivate language learners and encourage them to carry on with their languages to GCSE level. Our research shows that the events improve uptake at GCSE by 24%.

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages to encourage the learning of languages generally.

This event is being held for local schools in Cumbria, hosted by Cockermouth School and is the third event being held in Cockermouth's Eco Centre.
