North West

This year, Routes into Languages is running a new event based at the Eco Centre at Cockermouth School in Cumbria. This event will run similarly to the Language Enrichment Events that we hold at the consortium universities but on a smaller scale, with four schools from the area.

This gives local schools the opportunity to participate in this kind of event without having to travel long distances. It is also positive for Routes into Languages, as it allows us to reach schools which are more remote from the consortium universities.

Please find the draft Programme below. Activities include Language Taster Sessions in Arabic or Urdu, and a Multicultural Market with Chinese and Italian activities.

This is an enrichment event for students that have completed their AS Levels in languages. It is designed to introduce them to the specialist area of translation and interpreting.

Most sessions are not language specific but the pupils will do some interpreting practice in the languages that they are studying – French, German or Spanish.

This is an enrichment event for students that have completed their AS Levels in languages. It is designed to give them a taster of less widely taught languages to raise aspirations and encourage the continuation of language study at a higher level.

The event can accommodate up to 200 students and the languages covered are Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and Italian. Polish and Japanese have also been included in the past.

UCLAN, Preston is hosting several Skills Development Days for years 10 & 11 to raise awareness and development of Language skills. There will be hands-on activities such as PC usage and calligraphy. This event is also supported and promoted by Aimhigher throughout Lancashire.

This Top Up Course is for all the Arabic Teacher Trainees who completed a Teacher Training course in Arabic this Academic year, run by the COLT Project. The Course will consist in a one-day follow up workshop, free of charge.

This workshop will take place on Thursday 25th May 2010 at the Didsbury campus. It will run from 9.30am until 3.30pm.

This course is an excellent opportunity for some top up training for Arabic teachers.
 

The Community Language A-Level Day is an event run by Routes into Languages North West, aimed at AS and A2 students. It is designed to support them in their preparation for the A-Level examinations. The day will include:

- A talk about Languages in Higher Education and Career opportunities with Languages

- A revision session in the language studied and a Taster in another lesser-taught Language

- An examiner's talk in which an experienced A-Level examiner will talk about exam techniques and share tips for success.

A-Level students will also have the opportunity to talk to University Language students over lunch and find out more about life at University.

This event is free of charge and refreshments and lunch will be provided.

The Palaver Festival, held at the Contact Theatre in Manchester, is a festival of Language and Performance. It is a collaboration between the Contact Theatre and the University of Manchester.

Middle Eastern Studies presents
‘The importance of being Amy, Robert, Rafi , Tammi ...’

An original play about Arik and Carol who love each other in spite of and because of their backgrounds. (He is an Israeli, she is English). But an attempt to name their unborn child develops into a major crisis – should the baby’s name be Hebrew? English? Modern? Traditional? Long and distinguished? Snappy and cool? Is it a comedy or a tragedy? You decide.

Italian Studies presents
Back to the Future: Return of the Futurists
Mon 22 & Tue 23 March, Late Night Specials

Inspired by the style and principles of Marinetti's Futurism, this original performance fuses rhythmic beats and powerful visuals with the Italian language as has never been done before to create a unique image of our present time. BANG BANG TUM TUUM BELL, and the audience performs as well.

The German Society presents
‘Sonnenallee’ by Max Beinemann, based on the novel by Thomas Brussig
Tue 23, Wed 24 and Thu 25 March, 8pm

20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Society’s production of ‘Sonnenallee’ takes us back to 1970’s East Berlin. Follow Micha Kuppisch, his friends and family, as they juggle alleged Stasi neighbours, Existentialism and young romance with every-day life in the GDR.

The French students present
‘La Cantatrice Chauve’ (The Bald Primadonna) by Eugène Ionesco
Wed 24, Thu 25 and Fri 26 March, 7.30pm

Ionesco’s satirical play challenges British social norms thanks to its fast pace and hilarious verse, which draw the audience into the absurd world of the Smith household. This production offers a fresh and vibrant take on this classic French-Language pièce through the use of physical theatre, projection and sound effects.
