Following on from the previous success of the Score in French scheme and tournaments led by the University of Southampton, Royal Holloway, University of London is now launching Score in German! This activity sets German learning in a football context and will culminate in an inter-school tournament in early March. This event is also supported by Chelsea FC, Fulham FC and Queen's Park Rangers FC.

World of Work (WoW!)

Oxford Brookes University invites year 8 and 9 MFL students to a World of Work day where they can explore how languages are useful and important in the workplace. This one-day event will comprise sessions delivered by representatives from local businesses (such as Microsoft) and will also include language taster sessions.

Frohe Weihnachten! The University of Brighton invites students of German in years 7-13 to come along to a Weihnachtsmarkt on Tuesday 7th December from 4-6.30pm. You will be able to browse Christmas market stalls and buy Lebkuchen, Glühwein and Christmas decorations - providing you ask for them in German! Each school will also be asked to provide a short entertainment piece in German (a song, a reading, a play etc) and there will be a reading of the Christmas scene in Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen.

Languages Routes into Christmas

Languages Routes into Christmas will be hosted by the University of Surrey on Thursday 16th December, starting at 4pm. This seasonal event is aimed at languages students in years 12 and 13 and will offer a sample lecture (in French, German or Spanish) based on a Christmas theme, as well as the chance to take a taster session in a new language.

Students in the Canterbury area will be taking part in an exciting event to celebrate El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This Mexican-themed activity will include a variety of events including sugar skull decorating and food tasting.

All schools (primary and secondary) and 6th form colleges are invited to the University of Southampton's Day of the Dead exhibition, which will be on display from 5-6th November 2010.  Visiting schools will have the opportunity to view the exhibition, which has been created by members of the Mexican community in Southampton, and will be able to learn about different cultural practices. All students and their teachers will also engage in learning new Spanish vocabulary and will also be exposed to the University's environment.  There will be explantory posters and a quiz to be completed by the students.

Routes into Languages National Year 7 Spelling Bee

Teachers, are you looking to engage your new year 7 students in language learning? Are you keen to introduce new vocabulary in a fun and exciting way? Then look no further! Routes into Languages is launching a National Year 7 Spelling Bee in French, German and Spanish on 26th September to coincide with the European Day of Languages. All of the Routes into Languages consortia will be encouraging the year 7 students in their region to take part, so Routes South is on the lookout for the region's best spellers! 

The competition has four stages: class competition; school competition; regional final (to be held at the University of Brighton); national final (to be held at Homerton College, University of Cambridge on July 6th 2011).

Brief details can be found in the attached flier and further information, including a teachers' pack with word lists, will be posted here soon. The teachers' pack will also be sent to all those who submit registration forms.

E-Mentoring - University of Southampton

The University of Southampton is offering schools the chance to pair their students with languages undergraduate student mentors to support and encourage language learning. A secure system is used to facilitate email exchanges between mentors and mentees with the aim of building the school students' confidence in all aspects of language learning.
