German GCSE Study Morning: Ballon

Date:
Thursday, 6 February, 2020 - 10:00 to 13:00
Event Type:
Workshop
Region:
North West
Location:
HOME, Manchester

Before the screening of Ballon there will be an introduction to the film which will include some political, historical and geographical contextual information. After the film we will talk about some of the key themes of the film (as much of the session as possible will be in German).

Led by Maggie Hoffgen, Freelance Film Lecturer.

Programme:

One of the most spectacular attempts to cross over from the former Communist East Germany is recalled in Michael Herbig’s immersive drama. During the most tense times of the Cold War, two families hatched an audacious plan; to sneak over to the west in the dead of night in a home-made hot air balloon. They spent months fashioning their patchwork escape balloon in secret, before embarking on their escape attempt at enormous personal and political risk.

Spanish GCSE Study Morning: Rara

Date:
Tuesday, 4 February, 2020 - 10:00 to 13:00
Region:
North West
Location:
HOME, Manchester

This study morning will look at themes including pre-adolescence, friendship, family life, marital separation, sexual diversity and freedom, justice, prejudice and references to the historical background in contemporary Chile.

Carmen Herrero will introduce the film in English providing contextual information and key Spanish vocab. The screening will be followed by language exercises based around the film plus a discussion relating to; the characters of the film; the narrative; intercultural differences; film genre conventions and style.

Led by Carmen Herrero, Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Programme:

A coming-of-age story within a non-traditional family, where two sisters live happily with their mother and her female partner. Despite her loving and stable home life, as Sara approaches 13 she is suffering from typical teenage angst – her first crush, the instabilities of playground politics, and a growing desire for independence. Add to this an insidious homophobia from school staff and some other parents, and their domestic harmony starts to come under threat. With its great cinematography, acting and script, there’s a wonderfully natural feel to the film, especially in the love-hate relationship between the young sisters.

French A Level Study Day (Year 12): Une Saison en France

In the afternoon there will be a series of language exercises in French, focusing on the films main characters, plot development and themes. Film genres (such as psychological and social realism) and visual style will also be referenced.

One objective of the day is to enhance the students’ intercultural awareness.

Led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Head of French and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Programme:

Cannes Jury Prize winner Mahamat-Saleh Haroun takes a dark yet compassionate look at illegal immigrants struggling in the lower depths of Paris. Far from a picture-postcard journey, the film is something closer to a season in hell – especially for a grieving father whose fate depends on the mercy of the authorities. Yet as tough as it is, Une Saison en France is also warm and subtly heart-breaking, offering a moving vision of life for those stuck in legal and emotional limbo.

An exploration of the representation of immigrant women in a sample from the Spanish press

Monday, 13 May, 2019 - 16:00 to 17:00
Event Type:
Talk
Region:
North West
Location:
Manchester Metropolitan University, Geoffrey Manton Building

María Martínez Lirola

University of Alicante and Research Fellow, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, University of South Africa (UNISA)

The number of women who have immigrated to Spain in order to find a better life has increased in the last years. However, very few pieces of news pay attention to the reasons why they emigrate. A corpus of 30 pieces of news related to immigrant women was collected from February 2012 to December 2014 from the digital version of the main Spanish newspapers: El País, El Mundo and ABC. The main hypotheses in this research are the following:  immigrant women are not very visible in the Spanish press; they are represented mainly as vulnerable and victims and they are normally connected to social problems. In order to confirm or to deny the said hypothesis, this paper used critical discourse analysis, including visual grammar, to analyse the main topics of the pieces of news dealing with immigrant women and the main linguistic and visual characteristics used to describe them.

María Martínez Lirola is a Senior Lecturer of the Department of English at the University of Alicante, Spain and Research Fellow at the University of South Africa (UNISA). Her main areas of research are Critical Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. She has published more than 80 papers and seven books, such as Main Processes of Thematization and Postponement in English (Peter Lang, 2009). She has been a visiting scholar in different universities,  and has presented papers in international congresses all over the world.
