Translation Workshop for Schools

Translation today is a diverse, dynamic and rewarding profession. The National Network for Translation invites A-level and AS-level students to attend a hands-on workshop and learn more about translation as a career. The workshops will be led by experienced professional translators. The event is hosted by the University of Portsmouth.

Time: 1400-1645.
Venue: Park Building, University of Portsmouth
Cost: There is no charge for this event. Booking is required.

Languages available: Spanish, German, French. An extra workshop is available, subject to interest, in French, Italian or a 'multilingual' format (no specific language knowledge necessary).

2.00-2.15 Welcome
2.15-3.50 Translation workshops in small groups
3.50-4.10 Refreshments and a chance to chat to the translators
4.10-4.30 Plenary talk: Careers in Translation
4.30-4.45 Question and answer session
4.45pm Close of workshop

Numbers are limited to 25 participants per workshop. For more information about the workshop, or to book places, contact Dr Carol O’Sullivan at carol.osullivan@port.ac.uk. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Workshops will run subject to demand.

The Subtitling Route into a Language Career

Do you enjoy watching subtitled foreign films to improve your language skills or become more familiar with other cultures? Want a
professional career which allows you to apply your linguistic skills in the film industry? If so, this workshop on subtitling might be right
up your street.
Participants will learn how traditional film subtitles are created and will be introduced to the ever-growing range of skills and expertise that
the fledgling subtitling industry demands. Participants will carry out some practical tasks based on the issues covered in the session.

The translator in action: making business films for use abroad

As they strive to keep up with both globalisation and rapid technological change (from video tape to CD, DVD, Internet use and now iPhones),
businesses increase their use of film to advertise their products or train staff.
To make such films, a whole team of professionals is involved: director, editor, sound engineer, narrator, graphics/web designer.
When producing foreign versions, the translator has to address their needs, in addition to those of the client and viewers, if quality and
cost are to be optimised. The presentation will show how it can be done.

You will have the opportunity to hear short talks by professionals, from freelance translators and interpreters to local and international organisations, and to ask questions.

Summary

Do you watch films in the foreign language(s) that you are studying? If so, you’ll know it’s a way of seeing some great films, improving your listening skills and learning more about the culture of another country.
And what about the subtitles? Have you ever thought about how these are created for the cinema and DVDs?
In this workshop we’ll look at what makes subtitling different from other types of translation, the challenges and rewards, and we’ll be creating some subtitles of our own.
The workshop will run from 12.30 to 3.30 pm, and a light lunch will be served. There are 25 places for Y12 pupils.
