A Short Multilingual Film Competition


The University of Roehampton invites GCSE and A Level pupils across England to enter a multilingual film festival!*

Synopsis 

We have a passion for languages at Roehampton and seek to showcase the value of languages and explore their creative potential through film. Films need to include more than one language, through both audio and subtitle channels.
Pupils can create films (of up to 10 mins) and enter one of two categories: GCSE or A Level.

Shortlisted films (selected by Roehampton students and staff) will be invited to participate at the Roehampton Multilingual Film Festival in June 2019, where the winners will be announced .

Online learning packs, online tuition and workshops will be provided in phases to participating schools, supporting teachers and students to create short films with free and easily accessible equipment.

Participation criteria


o The competition is open to all secondary schools in England
o Pupils must be at either GCSE level or A level
o There must be at least two languages in the film
o The film must be written, filmed, acted and edited by students
o The film should not exceed 10 minutes

Languages and Law Summer School- Yr 12

The Languages and Law Summer School will take place from Monday 9th July to Friday 13th July 2018

This is an exciting opportunity for budding Year 12 linguists and lawyers to experience university study of these two disciplines at four of Capital L's partners: SOAS, King's College London, the University of Roehampton and the University of Westminster. Students will experience different aspects of law, sample different languages and learn how the two disciplines compliment each other. 

This event is free of charge. Places will allocated on the basis of Widening Participation criteria and teacher recommendation.

Capital L Year 10 Summer School

The flagship Capital L Languages Summer Schools will take place from Monday 18th June to Friday 22nd June 2018

This is a unique opportunity for 30 Year 10 students to experience language study at four different universities: King's College London, the University of Westminster, UCL and SOAS. There will also be a day trip in London. Students will experience a multitude of different languages and cultures and get involved in different interactive activities that will encourage students to be creative.

This summer is free of charge. Places will be allocated on the basis of Widening Participation criteria and teacher recommendation.

The Summer School is a chance for students to experience what language learning is like at university. Students will have the chance to visit different London universities: SOAS, the University of Westminster, UCL and King's College London.

Each day students have the opportunity to try a different language, learn something about different cultures and also take part in activities where they can use their language skills.

World Book Day

Come and explore literature from all across the globe!

World Book Day at SOAS encourages Year 8 and 9 students to explore the pleasures of books and literature from different corners of the world.

The day will focus on literary traditions from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. Students will have the chance to learn more about books from these different regions and get an introduction to a new language.

The Japanese Day is an opportunity for students to learn more about the language and culture of Japan. The programme includes:

  • An anime and manga masterclass 
  • A Kamishibai or Japanese storytelling workshop. 
  • Students will also learn more about studying languages at university and the year abroad.

Schools are welcome to bring up to 10 students each.

Turkish Immersion Immersion

The Turkish Immersion Academy is a project which is being offered for students who have been entered for GCSE Turkish (Year 9 - 11).

Each session will consist of two language lessons as well as a chance to meet current SOAS students and find out more about higher education.  Students will also receive information about studying languages at university and other language qualifications.

The aims of the project are to help prepare students for their Turkish examinations (particularly by improving their written skills), to give students the opportunity to experience a university environment and to raise the profile of world languages in general.

The students

The students should be heritage Turkish speakers, who have been entered for Turkish GCSE. Priority should be given to those who would be the first generation in their family to attend university and are taking exams this year.  This is a widening participation event forming part of the Capital L-Routes into Languages project.

Die Habenichtse Film Screening @ UCL

Die Habenichtse is the story of a couple who are brought together by a friend who days later dies in the World Trade Centre. The story then focuses on the psychological effects that the death has on the couple.

There will be three workshops around the film: a German language taster, a literature session and film-making session.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet the director, Florian Hoffmeister, the author of the book, Katharina Hacker and current undergraduate students. 

This is aimed at year 12 students who are interested in languages, film, psychology and literature.

The session will take place on Monday 12th February 2018 from 10am till 4pm.
