Japanese and Martial Arts - Year 7 and 8

Language Networks for Excellence and The School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications at the University of Wolverhampton invite you and your pupils to their Japanese and Martial Arts event for Year 7 and 8 pupils from 9.30am - 3pm on Friday, 7th March, 2014.

 

The day links sports and languages and consists of a Japanese master‐class and a martial arts session. Each group will do one session in the morning and one in the afternoon. The language session will include a focus on culture, food and language (including origami and calligraphy). The martial arts session will include some basic martial arts training with a focus on culture.

 

These events are fully funded and therefore FREE to attend. There are a maximum of 60 places on this event and we can offer each school up to 10 places. Please email amy.allen@wlv.ac.uk for more information and to book your places.

Racing with Languages - French

Language Networks for Excellence and The School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications at the University of Wolverhampton invite you and your pupils to their Racing with Languages event for Year 8 pupils studying French from 9am - 12.30pm on Tuesday, 4th February, 2014.

 

This session involves the use of both marketing and language skills as students are asked to develop an information booklet for F1 Racing teams which utilises the target language. This session is particularly attractive to boys and introduces a whole new aspect to language learning.

Business Language Champions - motivational talks and language tasters

Language Networks for Excellence and the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications at the University of Wolverhampton are pleased to offer TWO motivational talks by Business Language Champions featured in our "The Only Way is Languages!" DVD (watch it here). Each 60 minute interactive talk will be followed by a taster session in a given language with a specific career focus and will engage students and offer realistic career ‘snapshots’. The language tasters will be clearly aligned to a specific industry sector and raise the awareness of a language as a valid and beneficial skill to give competitive edge in the real world.

Event 1 – Tuesday 10th December

Taster session in Spanish (ideally aimed at students not currently studying Spanish) followed by a 60 minute motivational talk.

Places: 40 (Year 9 pupils)

60 minute motivational talk followed by taster session in Chinese (ideally aimed at students not currently studying Chinese)

Languages in Higher Education - Sixth Form Conference

Our Languages in HE Sixth Form Conference will take place at Aston University on Wednesday 12th June 2013.  This is a Routes into Languages West Midlands collaborative event involving a number of partner universities.

 

The Languages in HE Sixth Form Conference will enable your Year 12 students to discover more about the opportunities available for language study at university, helping them to make an informed decision about their future studies.

 

The varied conference programme will provide Year 12 students with an opportunity to hear about the different types of language study at university, as well as hearing from current undergraduate students about their experiences of language study and the year abroad.  In addition, students will participate in two sessions in their current language(s) of study (French, Spanish or German) and a taster session in a new language, or in Translation studies.

The Routes into Languages National Network for Translation in collaboration with Routes West Midlands would like to invite you to an event entitled “Careers in Translation and Interpreting” to be held at Aston University from 12.30pm – 4.30pm on 1st May, 2013.

 

The afternoon event is aimed at all students who are thinking of a career in the translation and interpreting industry. There will be speakers from various different backgrounds within the industry – from freelance and public service to EU and GCHQ – giving their experiences and advice.

Aston University Interactive Languages weekend 2013 *EXTERNAL EVENT*

Aston University will be hosting their 8th annual Interactive Languages Residential on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd March 2013.

 

This exciting and challenging event will give students the opportunity to develop their language and communication skills through marketing based activities, helping students to see the role their language skills could play in the world of work. 

 

The event will start at 11.00am on Saturday 2nd March and will end at 3.30pm on Sunday 3rd March.  Throughout the course of the weekend students will work in groups to create their own market strategy for the introduction of a foreign product into the English market and will gain a sound knowledge of the subject matter, develop sophisticated research skills and increase their confidence in the target language. 

 

Students will be taught by academic experts from Aston’s School of Languages and Social Sciences with the support of current undergraduates. During the evening, students will regroup for a well-deserved break from their studies where they will participate in language themed activities and attend an evening meal with members of the languages staff and student ambassadors. 

 

The cost of this event is £85 per person which includes accommodation on the night of Saturday 2nd March in Aston University’s Conference Centre and all meals throughout the weekend. This event is offered as part of our Sixth Form enrichment programme and is open to gifted linguists of AS or A2 standard in their chosen language.  The event is aimed at pupils in Year 12 or 13 however applications will be considered from Year 11 pupils.

 

Please note: booking is essential and the closing date for applications is Friday 8th February 2013.

Mother Tongue Other Tongue - EXTERNAL COMPETITION

A multi-lingual poetry competition that celebrates cultural diversity and the many languages spoken in schools across the UK.

 

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is supported by Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, and has been adopted as this year’s Laureate Education Project. The competition is free to enter and entries can be submitted by schools, or individuals. There are two categories:

 

  • Mother Tongue – pupils whose first language is not English, or who speak another language at home, are encouraged to submit a poem or song in their Mother Tongue. This can be an original or a ‘remembered’ piece. It can be written in any language, except English. Entries will be judged on a short paragraph in which pupils will explain the piece and its significance to them.

 

  • Other Tongue – pupils learning another language in school are encouraged to get creative with their Other Tongue and submit an original poem for the competition. Entries will be judged by a panel of writers and language experts selected by MMU from both within and without the university.

 

Winners from across the country will be invited to a national celebration event in November 2013, to be attended by Carol Ann Duffy and other supporting Poets.

The Spanish section at Aston University warmly invites you to a film showing of

 

La vida empieza hoy  (Life Begins Today) with screenwriter Alicia Luna

 

When: Thursday 6th December 2012 at 6pm

 

Where: Room MB554

 

Alicia Luna is an acclaimed Spanish screenwriter who was awarded a Goya for Take My Eyes (2003). She co-scripted the 2010 film La vida empieza hoy, directed by Laura Mañá, for which she was awarded a Film Critics Award.

 

Film plot-line: A group of elderly people attend sex classes where they are reminded that their bodies are still alive. They learn from each other there, they talk about their lives...

 

The film will be shown with English subtitles. There will be a discussion afterwards with Alicia Luna and this will be held in Spanish.
