Spanish AS Study Day:  Wakolda

HOME Schools and Colleges Programme is supported by Routes into Languages North West. This is a year-round education programme, which uses film, moving image and contemporary art to enrich students’ learning and bring innovation to the classroom. Throughout the year we have a variety of MFL study sessions specially programmed to support GCSE, AS and A2 students of French, German, Spanish, Arabic and Urdu, all led by native language speakers.

Each study session uses film as an exciting and accessible way to encourage students to use their language skills. Students will enjoy a specially selected film, screened in the target language with English subtitles. Sessions are supported by contextualising introductions, which provide information about the themes and characters of the film along with information about the film's director and place within film history and culture. Following the film, students complete language exercises based on the film using their new vocabulary.

Films are selected to complement GCSE, AS and A2 specifications and provide excellent material for topic-based work and oral exam preparation.

A German doctor meets an Argentinean family and follows them on a long desert road to a small town where the family is starting a new life. Eva, Enzo and their three children welcome the doctor into their home and entrust their young daughter, Lilith to his care, not knowing that they are harbouring one of the most dangerous criminals in the world.

This AS study day will be focused on the film Wakolda  and its main features. Carmen Herrero will introduce the film in Spanish, providing relevant historical and contextual information as well as key vocabulary to understand some of the key aspects of the film. The screening will be followed after lunch by a series of language exercises in Spanish based on the film, its characters, settings and contexts. Themes discussed during the session will include adolescence, family and social relationships, work and study life, nazism and Argentine history. This session will guide students on how meanings are generated by film through genre conventions, narrative constructions, cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing and sound; and the way the above contribute to the representation of Argentine culture and society in film.

Using Corpora in Language Teaching - Developing Corpus based materials for the classroom.

In recent years, language corpora have provided invaluable insight to develop materials for language classrooms. Language corpus, often defined as a collection of electronic authentic language data, enables language teachers to investigate the patterns of language in use, with the assistance of computer software. Exploring corpora with learners can help them to develop their digital literacy skills and become more autonomous in their learning of language.

We will introduce participants to the basic principles of corpus analysis, and how these can be used in the language classroom. Teachers will be given the opportunity to use their students’ or any other materials to build their own corpus, and to use this data to develop classroom materials for their specific learners.

(In our workshops we will be using the freely available (Mac/PC) software AntConc)

The ever popular Language Enrichment Events are back for winter 2013-2014. Aimed at year 8 pupils, the events are designed to motivate language learners and encourage them to carry on with their languages to GCSE level. Our research shows that the events improve uptake at GCSE by 24%.

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages to encourage the learning of languages generally.

Cost per pupil: £4 / Free for Widening Participation (WP) schools.

The events are only open to schools where languages are not compulsory. Priority will be given to schools who have not attended a LEE in previous years.

Film and Culture Event (Year 10 and 11)

Wednesday 21st October 2015, 10.00am – 2.30pm

University of Liverpool

The Film and Culture Event (FACE) is for language students in Year 10 and 11.  It is designed to highlight the benefits of learning languages through a careers  talk and to show the fun way in which languages can be taught with a film session (in French, Spanish or German). There are also two taster sessions in a less commonly taught language such as Arabic, Farsi or Chinese Mandarin to highlight the diverse range of language study options available at a higher level.

The aim of the event is to boost students’ enthusiasm for language learning so that they continue with their languages to ‘A’ Level and beyond. The event is an excellent opportunity to show pupils the variety of languages on offer and a range of fun ways they can learn.

These events are usually very popular and places will be allocated after the closing date of 12th October 2015.

There is a charge of £5 per pupil to cover some of the costs.  Subsidised by Routes into Languages NW.

Language Enrichment Event for Year 8 Pupils

Our ever-popular Language Enrichment Events for year 8 pupils are back. These are interactive, exciting events that encourage pupils to continue with their language studies at school and to think about the advantages of learning a new language or gaining a qualification in a language they may speak at home. These events have proved extremely popular with pupils and language teachers over the years and our research has shown a 24% increase in pupils taking language GCSEs after they attended the events. 

The events use language tasters and cultural activities in less widely taught languages (e.g. Arabic and Mandarin) to encourage the learning of languages generally.

Cost per pupil: £5

Subsidised by Routes into Languages NW.

Priority will be given to schools that have not attended a Language Enrichment Event in previous years.
