Translation has played a key role in the transmission of knowledge throughout history. However, this has rarely been a neutral process and has served agendas such as nation and empire building. Drawing on a particular case of appropriation of knowledge, as illustrated by  travel writing and the translation into Arabic of French texts for use in nineteenth-century Egypt, the lecture will discuss the complexity of knowledge transfer and the mediation of the translator in representing and constructing an acceptable ‘Other' as part of a national project.

This is a free event open to all.
