Are you interested in working as a translator or interpreter, but unsure how to start? This one day event with contributions from industry, alumni, practitioners, the Institute of Translation & Interpreting and Heriot-Watt University Careers Service should answer questions for potential translators / interpreters on:

- Freelance, in-house, generalist or specialist translation and different types of interpreting

- Training and development

- Working with agencies

- Working with European institutions

- Career planning, networking, creative job hunting and breaking through the "no experience-no work" barrier

 

This event is being arranged by Heriot-Watt University and the Institute of Translation & Interpreting with support from the "Routes into Languages" initiative.

9.30-10:00 Coffee & registration
10:00 - Welcome by Head of Languages & Intercultural Studies department
Employers Panel
10.15-11.15 - Working for the European Institutions - interpreting careers at the European Institutions
11:15-12:15 - Working as a translator / interpreter through an agency, The Big Word
12:15-1:15 - Lunch break with optional visits to interpreting labs and training booths (register for visits upon arrival)
1:15-2:45 - Translators and Interpreters panel - contributions from the professional field and the Institute of Translation & Interpreting
3:30-4:30 - Discussion panels in break-out rooms
Discussion panels will comprise a cross-section of practitioners and speakers will discuss the following points and answer questions from the floor:
- the transition from university to employment
- setting yourself up as a freelancer / starting your career
- tips and advice for the various career paths
