French A Level Study Day (Year 12): Une Saison en France

Wednesday, 22 January, 2020 - 10:30 to 15:00
Event Type:
North West
HOME, Manchester

This study day examines the themes of the film (family, migration, social exclusion and solidarity) and how film can raise these important issues within society.

Isabelle Vanderschelden will introduce the film in French. Students will be provided with information about the director, the actors, the social and political context of the film.  The genre conventions used in the film will also be highlighted. A few short exercises will provide key vocabulary. All students receive a workbook which they can keep.

In the afternoon there will be a series of language exercises in French, focusing on the films main characters, plot development and themes. Film genres (such as psychological and social realism) and visual style will also be referenced.

One objective of the day is to enhance the students’ intercultural awareness.

Led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Head of French and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Cannes Jury Prize winner Mahamat-Saleh Haroun takes a dark yet compassionate look at illegal immigrants struggling in the lower depths of Paris. Far from a picture-postcard journey, the film is something closer to a season in hell – especially for a grieving father whose fate depends on the mercy of the authorities. Yet as tough as it is, Une Saison en France is also warm and subtly heart-breaking, offering a moving vision of life for those stuck in legal and emotional limbo.
