Aims of the INSET:

  • Provide contexts and methodology to integrate films into existing languages programmes and especially the A level syllabus, but also HE.
  • Introduce key terminology and film concepts with a view to using them in the language class and integrating them into formative language exercises.
  • Present multimodal approaches for the use of film in language learning contexts using generic and thematic approaches.
  • Provide guidance on how to integrate cultural differences, intercultural awareness/dialogue in the modern language class.
  • Propose a series of exercises suitable at different levels

10.00 - 10.30:  Registration / Coffee

10.30 – 11.00:  Thinking Film, Thinking Languages (Carmen Herrero and Isabelle Vanderschelden, MMU & FILTA)

11.00 – 11.45:  How to develop creative language exercises with film Practical session (by language: French/Spanish/German/Italian/Mandarin/Urdu)

11.45 – 12.00:  Feedback session: presentation by groups

12.00 – 12.30:  Lunch

12.30 – 1.15:  How to make a visual analysis: the teacher as student           

1.15 - 1.30:  Feedback. Conclusion, questions and close
