Can your pupils be our next Apprentices?

A FREE one-day marketing challenge using French or Spanish and hosted at Durham and Newcastle Universities for more able and talented pupils.

The Challenge:

To complete a series of language based tasks; using all four skills and produce a short voice over for an advert for one of the region’s tourist attractions.

 

The winning team will be hired and their advert shared with the visitor attraction and on social media. The other teams will all be fired!

Schools may send one or two teams of 5 pupils from Y9/10.

The Spanish language day will be hosted at Durham University on 20 June.

The French language day will be hosted at Newcastle University on 27 June.

Both days begin at 0930 and conclude at 1500. Lunch is provided.

We are limited by space in both venues and early application is strongly recommended.

1000                       Watch English version of The Auckland Project 

The Auckland Project is a multi million pound investment in Bishop Auckland in County Durham. It needs to share news of its tourism offer to audiences across the world to help attract visitors to the town.

1005                       Challenge 2Customer service

                                Look at feedback from customers and prepare a short reply in ENGLISH to a message of complaint and one complimenting the company. Marks awarded to each team (10 points for best response – 1 point)

1040 – 1050           Comfort break

1050                       Challenge 3 – Thinking of the consumer

What services does a business need to provide? Watch UBISOFT video and play word bingo.

1115                        Pupils will view television adverts: Groups to undertake two translation exercises; one French to English and one English to French.

1200 – 1240        Lunchtime

1245                       Challenge 4 – Making the ad

Pupils will use a powerpoint template to create an advert. Dictionary and language support from Ambassadors and staff.

1355                       Pupils to use flipchart sheets to write down benefits of foreign language skills, why linguists are more employable etc.

1410-1430            Completed adverts are shown and judging undertaken. (Each judge ranks 1-5. Team with most points scores 40, second 35, third 30, fourth 25, fifth and sixth 20 and the rest 15 points).

Registration information:

  1. Teachers may register 1 or 2 groups of 5 pupils from year 9/10
  2. Pupils must be currently studying French and have sufficient ability to undertake the days' events
  3. At least one DBS cleared teacher must accompany groups at a ratio of 1:10 or less
  4. Your registration is not confirmed until you have received an email confirmation
  5. Teachers must submit attendee information including dietary and other special requirements as requested in order to complete a suitable risk assessment
  6. Late cancellation, after 12 noon on June 13th 2018 will incur a £50 administration fee. The event is otherwise completely free of charge
