In collaboration with Europe Direct North East, Routes into Languages North East presents Beat the Rat Race: Using Languages To Get Ahead

Representatives of a wide range of professional sectors will demonstrate how language skills have benefited them in their careers in a fun and interactive way during morning Q&A sessions. Each school group will then be put to the test creating their very own job advertisement in a poster competition. Following a free lunch, in the afternoon pupils will have the opportunity to learn a completely new language during taster sessions run by our very own Student Language Ambassadors.

With an exciting panel of real life linguists, language taster sessions and more, this event is designed to inspire your pupils to take languages forward at GCSE and show them just where it could take them in future. The panellists use languages within their work and come from a wide variety of backgrounds and organisations in the region. This is a unique chance to highlight the opportunities available to those proficient in a foreign language.

The event will take place in the King's Road Centre at Newcastle University on Wednesday 4th November 10.00-14.30, with registration from 09.30. Materials will be provided in advance of the event to enable you to encourage your pupils to engage as well as possible with activities during the event.

Each school group is invited to bring a group of 10 Year 9 pupils (or Year 8 in the event of early GCSE option choices) and we can this year offer places to up to 14 schools.

Please be aware that, whilst there is no charge to take part in the event, in a bid to ensure that places are not left unexpectedly vacant at the expense of schools who might otherwise have been able to participate, a £50 administration fee will ordinarily be levied on cancellations without reasonable cause with less than two weeks' notice. Please take this into consideration when making a booking.

Programme:

The registration desk will open from 09:30 for a 10:00 start. Morning activities will include a Q&A session with linguists representing a variety of career sectors followed by a Languages Work poster competition. Pupils will then have the opportunity to explore a new language in afternoon taster sessions. A packed lunch for pupils and buffet lunch for teachers will be provided free of charge. The day will end at 14.30. Please see below for a full programme available to download.

Joining the event as panellists in the Q&A sessions will be representatives from…

Aesica Pharmaceuticals * Ernst & Young * International Newcastle * UBISOFT * Ibex Innovations * Ebiquity * Newcastle Hospital Community Health Services * Pearson Engineering * Ethical Partnership * China Talk * Newcastle University International Office * German Consulate in the North East * and more!
