What's happening in the South East?

The work of the South Consortium over the next three years involves liaising with schools to promote the uptake of modern foreign languages across the South Central region. We plan to involve businesses, local authorities, HEIs, 6th form colleges and all schools in the region in a range of networks, activities and special events.

Activities and events

  • MYUNISPACE – an e-mentoring scheme hosted by the University of Southampton.
  • Able Linguist Days – a special event for able linguists hosted by the University of Portsmouth
  • Up for Languages – this initiative is aimed at Year 8 pupils and involves a university residential experience hosted by the University of Portsmouth.
  • The Gold Award for Languages – this initiative will be based around the existing two-week work experience that school pupils undertake but within a language learning framework. It will be hosted by the University of Portsmouth.
  • Learning Together – hosted by the University of Southampton, this initiative will develop three activities which involve university students working with school pupils: Drop-in not Out; Join the Club; Score in French.
  • Languages on Film – this event involves a two-day residential at the University of Brighton where selected pupils work in the target language to produce a film.
  • World of Work (WOW!) – this project involves two career-related events aimed at Year 9 and Year 12 pupils.
  • Reaching out to Parents – two twilight sessions are proposed to discuss with parents the ways language study can enhance their child’s career potential
