The South Wales Regional Final was held on Wednesday, 2 April at Ysgol Bryngwyn, Llanelli. Routes staff received a warm welcome from staff and pupils at the school and the excitement about the competition in the school was infectious.

Routes Cymru was grateful to teachers from participating schools and also CILT Cymru colleagues for their support with the judging and verifying of the competitions. During the event, pupils also had the chance to practise their spelling in the practice room or the chance to complete language quizzes and other language-related activities between rounds.

The final rounds took place in the school’s hall which was offered quite a grand setting for the 16 pupils who reached this stage. The pupils were not fazed by the grand setting and they all did themselves and their schools proud competing for the title of South Wales Regional Champion.

Bangor University was the location of the North Wales Regional Final on Tuesday, 8 April. Once again there was a feeling of nervousness and excitement amongst the competitors and those there to support them. As they had done in the South Wales Regional Final, the competitors demonstrated an excellent knowledge of the words.

A total of 144 pupils from 28 schools took part in the regional finals during which the standard of spelling was very high and all the competitors did an excellent job of spelling the words, representing their schools and proving themselves to be competent young linguists.

Routes Cymru would like to thank everyone who helped the pupils prepare for the competition and everyone who took part on the day.

The National Final for Wales will take place in Aberystwyth in June.
