Summary
Our fifty minute participatory workshops for secondary school pupils seek to encourage young people to learn languages by exploring perceived barriers, offering solutions and sharing the positive results, wide appeal and relevance of language acquisition. We use a questionnaire to identify and promote awareness of varying learning styles and discuss the ways in which we need not only sit behind a desk to learn a language. We encourage students to think about their strengths and to be engaged and in control of their own learning. These notions are put to the test through an interactive and multi-sensory exercise in a non-European language and we conclude with a discussion of how experiences in the session can be taken on board and applied to their own language learning.
